DR1 Andalusia (Spain)

Current status

In Andalusia, specifically along the Sierra Morena mountain range, holm oak dehesas are the most relevant agroforestry ecosystem. Its great economic, social, and ecological importance in the region triggered the enactment of a legislation framework, the Dehesa Law (7/2010), with the 2017 Master Plan for Andalusian Dehesas and the Decree 530/2004. During the last decades, there has been a decline in the vigor and tree density of these ecosystems in some areas due to tree mortality and lack of regeneration. Several factors are responsible for these processes: abiotic factors, such as meteorological droughts and water availability, biotic factors, such as the oomycete Phytophthora cinnamomi traditional agro-silvo-pastoral practices, and intensification.

Leader:
UCO and IFAPA

Regional authority:
Consejería (CAPADR)

Monitored farms:

This DR has four densely monitored farms with meteorological, hydrological, soil, vegetation, and other measurements:

  • PDA1 – Cardeña (121 ha)
  • PDA2 – Pozoblanco (151 ha)
  • PDA3 – Hinojosa (14.5 ha)
  • PDA4- Villaviciosa (98.7ha)

Actions to be implemented:

Evaluation of NBSs promoting ecosystem conservation and restoration through early detection of vulnerability to drought and other factors such as Phytophthora cinnamomi. Hydrological, ecological, and productivity modeling, tree damage and mortality processes modeling, scenario analysis, and comparative analysis.

Specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

  • At least 2 NBSs
  • 5 models applied
  • 10 Datasets collected
  • 4 stakeholder groups interested in NBSs
  • 20 users attending workshops
  • 1 policy recommendations
