RR1 Castile and Leon (Spain)
Current status
The Sardon experimental catchment (~80km2 ) is located approximately 35 km west of Salamanca (Spain) in the western, granitic part of the Iberian Peninsula. The land cover is typical for Dehesa oak woodland with sparse occurrences of Quercus ilex and Quercus pyrenaica oaks. The acorns of these trees represent the main food for the cattle, especially quality porc of Iberico black pigs.
The area is remote with very few habitants and has low groundwater storage being particularly vulnerable to droughts; therefore in 1993, an automated, monitoring network was installed by UT, to study impact of climate change on groundwater resources. Currently it consists of 12 groundwater logging points with divers and two automated microclimatic stations. The catchment is representative for the Northern Spanish Dehesa.
