DR3 Alentejo (Portugal)

Current status

PDA8-Lezirias (38°49’45.13’’N, 8°47’28.61’’W) and PDA9-Vila Viçosa (38°47′N, 7°22′W) PDAs are located in large estates in Alentejo, Portugal. The sites are in cork-oak (Quercus suber) savannah-type of ecosystems with an understory of a variety of shrub species intermixed with diverse pasture areas.

The major economic activity is mainly based on cork production, complemented by cattle grazing and crops. Estate managers are committed to maximise ES (ecosystem services) such as carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation. Lack of human use and management and drought are increasing tree mortality, decreasing oak regeneration and turning these ecosystems into shrublands, dominated by drought tolerant shrubs such as Cistus spp. A better management, namely of water resources, is critical to increase ecosystem resilience to drought, and maintaining the provision of ES (ecosystem services) and biodiversity. This DR includes two PDAs.
